2011 Annual Appeal Challenge

An open letter from Executive Director Jaci Barton,
and President Carol Carter

Dear Friends:

In 2001, eighteen years after our founding, Barnstable Land Trust reached the LANDmark of 500 acres preserved. Now, in little more than half the time that it took us to preserve the first 500 acres, the 1000-acre LANDmark is clearly in focus.

Lead donors to BLT’s Annual Appeal have come forward to show their support by pledging to match up to $40,000 of your donations.

To help us reach this remarkable 1000-acre milestone, we are presenting you with an exciting challenge. Donations given to BLT from now to the end of the year will be matched dollar for dollar. In addition, gifts over $1,000 will be matched $2 for every $1 given!

We are on a roll…

Three initiatives have been completed this year, in Cotuit, Centerville and Barnstable, bringing BLT’s total acres preserved to 952.  The momentum is with us to finish three more land saving initiatives:

SutherlandAwaiting final signatures is a gift of a conservation restriction from Ken Sutherland on 27 acres of beautiful woodlands on the shore of Shubael Pond in Marstons Mills.

Coombs BogsA successful state grant request will guarantee that 6.6 acres of diverse habitat will be protected in Centerville, bringing with it a built-in trail system for kids to continue to enjoy.

Herring RunA community-wide fundraising effort, together with funds from the Town’s Community Preservation Act and a state grant, will help seal the deal to preserve 1.17 acres – the last undeveloped parcel along the fishway that leads herring from the Marstons Mills River to their spawning grounds in Middle Pond.

Once these lands are protected, BLT will be just 13 acres shy of the 1000-acre LANDmark.

Your gift to BLT’s Annual Appeal will ensure that we soon achieve that remarkable feat.   Remember, every dollar you give to BLT stays right here in our community, helping to preserve the natural heritage of this place we love.

Please give as generously as you can to help us climb up and over 1,000 acres.
