Carol Carter, President
Cotuit
For over thirty years Carol worked in New Jersey and New York as an interior designer, specializing in old house renovations. In 1999, Carol and her husband Len fell in love with an Inn in Cotuit and started a whole new journey. For 8 years they renovated and then operated the Josiah Sampson House; a bed and breakfast in their historic home. Two years ago they sold the inn and retired as innkeepers.
Carol’s love of old houses drew her to the Cotuit-Santuit Historical Society where she served as President for 4 years. She believes in preserving the very special beauty of Cape Cod, the place she now calls home.
Lee Ann Hesse, Vice President
West Barnstable
Lee Ann Hesse is a native of Maine who joined her husband on Cape Cod 17 years ago. After graduating from Bates College in Lewiston, she worked in Boston at Scudder Stevens and Clark, and at Lord & Taylor.
Upon moving to the Cape, Lee Ann was the Operations Manager and Treasurer at the CCB&T Investment Company and subsequently the Director of Human Resources with the former Cape Cod Bank & Trust Company. Currently she manages the human resource function, coordinates marketing and is actively involved with public and investor relations at Bank of Cape Cod in Hyannis. Lee Ann resides in West Barnstable with her family.
Janet Eshbaugh, Clerk
Osterville
Janet was elected as a new Board member in the fall of 2006. Her family moved to Centerville during her teenage years. She met her future husband, Jeff Eshbaugh at Barnstable High School, and in 1978 the two returned to the Cape to settle in Forestdale. They also own a home in Osterville.
Janet received her BS in Education from Worcester State College with concentrations in English and Math, and is currently an administrative assistant in the Special Education department of the Sandwich Public School system. Janet is a nuts and bolts computer person who has long been involved with things Internet, having taught one of the first classes in HTML on Cape Cod. She also managed the Sandwich Community School's website for many years. Janet has worked with BLT on special events and would like to become involved with environmental education initiatives.
D. Joseph Wood, Treasurer
Hyannis Port
Joe Wood has an extensive financial background. He was a vice president at the World Bank, where he was responsible for the Bank’s financial policy for over a decade. In addition, he led the staff work to create the Global Environment Facility, and was in charge of the Bank’s operations in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan.
He retired in 1998 after 31 years at the World Bank and co-founded the Bridge Fund, a non-profit organization that runs development projects (education, health, water) in Tibetan communities in Western China. Joe recently stepped down as chairman of the Fund, and currently serves as treasurer and board member of Unnitti Foundation, which supports empowerment projects for women in India and Nepal.
Joe has an undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Yale and an advanced degree Economics from Oxford. He and his wife Kathleen (Sinclair) reside in Hyannis Port, where Kathleen’s family has had a home since 1911.

Polly Dana-Schumacher
Barnstable
Polly Dana-Schumacher lives in Barnstable with her husband Bill and dog Molly. She is a graduate of Cape Cod Community College and Greensboro College in North Carolina. She has 39 years in volunteer management in not-for-profit organizations; in 2007 she retired from Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod where she was Director of Volunteers.
Polly and her husband became BLT members in 1988 and have been regular volunteers at the annual Gifts From the Sea fundraiser. Polly also volunteers in the BLT office once a week, supporting staff in the management of volunteer services.
Joseph E. Hawley
Centerville
Joe is Vice President & Business Development Officer of the Trust and Asset Management Department of the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank. As a Certified Financial Planner and as BLT’s Treasurer in previous years, he has chaired BLT’s Finance Committee, assisting with investment management.
He is past president of Barnstable Land Trust and currently chairs BLT's Nominating Committee. Joe has begun to develop programs in planned giving to help raise funds for land preservation. He is a Corporator of Cape Cod Health Care; Corporator of Heritage Museums and Gardens, and a member of the Hyannisport Club. Joe and his wife Sarah live in
Bill Keto
Cotuit
Bill Keto has been actively involved in Barnstable Land Trust for more than six years. He first came to BLT through his volunteer work at the Cape & Islands Senior Environment Corps, helping with the important area of land management. Bill’s commitment to giving back is more than evident in his many volunteer roles. In addition to volunteering for BLT and the Senior Environment Corps, he has been involved in the Bridge Creek Marsh restoration under the auspices of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod, and has been a board member of the Mary Barton Land Trust since 2005. He is a past president of the Osterville Men’s Club and a board member of the Santuit/Cotuit Historical Society, where he still serves as a docent in the summer season.
Bill retired after 32 years of federal service as Program Director at the Air Force Electronic Systems Center at Hanscom Air Force Base. He has owned a home in Cotuit since 1984 and has been a fulltime resident of the village since 1999.
Tom Mullen
West Barnstable
Tom retired after 15 years as the Director of the Town of Barnstable Department of Public Works, having worked previously as Superintendent of the Barnstable Water District. He has brought his extensive knowledge of water supply protection in the Town of Barnstable to bear on BLT’s Land Acquisition and Stewardship Programs. Tom’s active interest in environmental protection is evident in his love of woodland walkways.
For the past 5 years, Tom has worked on the extension to extend and maintain the countywide Cape Cod Pathways trail system through the town of Barnstable. Many trails have been created and linked with preexisting trails. The entire system has been marked with Pathway tags, and map kiosks are in place at all major decision points along the trails. Maps are also available on the Cape Cod Commission web page as well as Town of Barnstable and BLT's individual web sites. Tom and his wife Evelyn live in Barnstable Village.
James C. O'Conor
Centerville
Jim O'Conor is originally from East Hampton, NY, and has lived on Cape Cod for fifteen years. Jim is Vice President and Director of Residential & Consumer Lending at The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank.
Prior to joining Cape Cod Five, Jim held management and lending positions with Cape Cod Bank & Trust and TD Banknorth. He is a trustee of The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation Trust and a current member of its Youth & Education Donation Advisory Committee. Jim lives in Centerville with his wife, Sonja, and twin daughters.
Tim O'Keeffe
West Hyannis Port
Tim O'Keeffe has been involved in the sea as a vocation and avocation all his life. He lived and worked on sailing yachts on the East Coast, the Caribbean and Europe, including five trips across the Atlantic. Since 1983 he has been a maritime captain with a 100-ton U.S.C.G. captain's license. In addition, he is a trustee and past commodore of the Hyannis Port Yacht Club. As part of his duties, he oversaw the Club's 180-foot pier extension project.
A graduate of Dartmouth College, he received an MBA from Columbia Univeristy, and has worked in commercial banking and financial consulting. Tim had been a summer resident of Hyannis Port since 1951 and moved to the Cape fulltime in 1983. He and his wife Suzanne live in West Hyannis Port.
Craig D. Spinner
Osterville
Craig Spinner works, lives and is raising a family in Osterville. Craig and his wife Desiree, a lifetime “ Cape Codder” and Board Member of CapeAbilities, share a passion for giving back to their community through non-profits and other charitable organizations. He is a contributing member for Three Bays Conservation, Inc. and a proud supporter for CapeAbilities.
Craig is the Director of Marketing for the Osterville-based Savant Systems LLC. He led marketing efforts in launching the company, its brand and products to key markets, and played an integral role in the growth of Savant from a small start-up to a multi-million dollar organization.
Growing up in rural Connecticut and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Connecticut, Craig has always had a true passion for the preservation of land and natural marine habitats. Craig shares this enthusiasm with those around him, especially his young son Luke, who loves nothing more than family walks and hikes through the natural landscapes of Cape Cod.
Mary-Gaines Standish
Osterville
Mary-Gaines and her husband Peter were always interested in land conservation when living in western Pennsylvania. When they moved to Cape Cod fourteen years ago they became ardent supporters of the Barnstable Land Trust. Peter passed away several years ago, but Mary-Gaines has continued to be involved with this very worthwhile organization. She also volunteers at a soup kitchen in Hyannis and is making arrangements to volunteer at Hospice.
W. Bruce Wallin
Cotuit
Bruce Wallin is a graduate of Fordham University, The Wharton School, and Iona College, where he received an MBA in Organizational Behavior. His professional background includes Senior Vice President of PHH Homequity, the world’s largest corporate relocation company; President of Broker Services at Cendant, where he was responsible for creating, developing and enhancing the value of the company’s residential real estate broker-broker referral network with annual sales volume of over $3.3 billion; and Senior Executive Consultant with Realogy Corporation.
Bruce has also taught subjects such as Real Estate Appraisal, Human Relations and Economics at Western Connecticut State University, University of Connecticut, and Norwalk Technical College. Bruce lives in Cotuit.
Rick Walters
Cummaquid
Rick Walters has worked as a health care manager and consultant for over two decades. He is currently the Director of Financial Support Services at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, CT. Prior to that, he was the Director of Business Affairs, Department of Pediatrics at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, where he was responsible for operations, financial management and revenues for a department with a $25 million operating budget. Rick graduated with a BA in English from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, a Master of Industrial Labor Relations from Cornell, and an MBA in Health Care Management from the Wharton School, where he was a Teagle Fellowship Scholar.
He had been a part-time resident of Barnstable since 1971, having spent summers in the village since the 1950s. It has been his primary residence since 2002. In his spare time Rick enjoys bird watching, hiking the hills and forests of New England, and being involved in environmental issues, particularly supporting efforts to preserve the unique beauty and character of Barnstable.
Barnstable Land Trust
